After reading the amazing Shade, I was more than ready to see what was next for Aura, Logan, and Zachary in Shift, the much-anticipated sequel. Thankfully, Shift was nearly everything I hoped it would be in character development as well as plot development.
Starting a few months after Shade left off, Aura is still waiting and praying for Logan to come back from being a shade, and after one night, he does. Suddenly, not only is Logan back in Aura’s life as a ghost, but he also wants Aura to help him get justice for himself as well as other ghosts, specifically ones thought to be shady. Reeling from the new developments in that area of her life, Aura does not know what to do with Zachary, who has been patiently been waiting for Aura to come to terms with Logan’s death. How can she tell him Logan’s back again just when she was ready to start things up with him finally? More importantly, after new secrets and developments arise over the Shift, Aura once again left fearing for her life and secrets as well as Zachary’s. What will happen next? Only more pages can tell in this fast-paced addition to the Shade trilogy, one that will have fans eager to find out what is next for Aura!
One of my favorite parts of Shade was the characters, and with Shift, this was no different. For one, I still adored Aura, even though her decisions involving Logan and Zach annoyed me at times. Aura is in most ways an awesome protagonist because of the fact she constantly tries to figure out what caused the shift and how to make all of her friends, especially Zach and Logan, happy in the end, and she never really lets anything get in her way.
However, the whole love triangle with Logan, Zach, and Aura got a little old after a while, in my opinion, because for some reason no matter how sensible Aura is with other things, with these two boys she is a complete wreck. Constantly Aura is debating between the two, even going so far as to add a third boy to the whole thing. In addition, she had this problem that if she was with Zach, she was thinking of Logan, and when she was with Logan, she was thinking about Zach. It just got a tiresome after a while, because no matter how much I adore these characters, Aura needed to decide, and more importantly, Logan and Zach especially needed to give her an ultimatum.
Even with that, I still really enjoyed the plot overall. Jeri Smith-Ready added great new developments to the topic of the Shift, and even managed to surprise me once or twice with all the new twists, turns, and events relating to it. I have to say I enjoy where this plot line is going, and I cannot wait to see how it all ends. I also liked seeing the Keeleys begin to come terms with everything.
Jeri Smith Ready’s writing was also great. She always does a fabulous job of creating well-developed characters and plot lines, and I especially loved the ending. It was sad in some ways, but in others, it was just what I wanted, especially given the end events to the Logan-Zach-Aura triangle.
Even though Shift has its downside, it still is a fabulous addition to the Shade trilogy, one that has me even more excited to read Shine, the upcoming conclusion.
