Review: The Coincidence of Callie and Kayden by Jessica Sorensen

Summary/Cover Image from Goodreads:
There are those who don’t get luck handed to them on a shiny platter, who end up in the wrong place at the wrong time, who don’t get saved.

Luck was not on Callie’s side the day of her twelfth birthday when everything was stolen from her. After it’s all over, she locks up her feelings and vows never to tell anyone what happened. Six years later her painful past consumes her life and most days it’s a struggle just to breathe.

For as long as Kayden can remember, suffering in silence was the only way to survive life. As long as he did what he was told, everything was okay. One night, after making a terrible mistake, it seems like his life might be over. Luck was on his side, though, when Callie coincidentally is in the right place at the right time and saves him.

Now he can’t stop thinking about the girl he saw at school, but never really knew. When he ends up at the same college as Callie, he does everything he can to try to get to know her. But Callie is reserved and closed off. The more he tries to be part of her life, the more he realizes Callie might need to be saved.
Review:

I bought The Coincidence of Callie & Kayden on a whim over winter break because of all the amazing stuff I had been hearing about it as well as its author. Plus I will admit the 99 cent price tag didn't hurt that much that much either. Amazingly, The Coincidence of Callie & Kayden ended up being one of my favorite reads of 2012. It was emotional. It contained realistic characters who had faults like just the rest of us. Better yet, it contained a swoon-worthy romance, one that was much more than just the typical love at first sight stereotype.

I'm not sure how to even really begin with reviewing this book besides the whole "YOU ALL NEED TO READ IT!" However, I guess I'll start with the characters. From the first page, Callie really managed to capture my heartstrings and pull on them. She was a girl who had a faced a harrowing tragedy as a child, and because of it had a hard time trusting others as well as being her own person. She was broken in most ways possible. However, in this Callie starts to come out of her shell, and stand up for herself, and I have to say: I loved seeing that transformation occur, especially since Jessica did such a great job of bringing the whole emotional process to life within the pages! Kayden, the male lead in this, was equally as screwed up as Callie because of his childhood. However, he did a better job of hiding it than she did. Kayden really manged to help Callie as the book progressed through their friendship, and that made me really come to like him. He was sweet and funny and just an all around amazing guy. I also enjoyed the additions of Callie's best friend as well as Kayden's since they both added a lot of greatness to the book...Callie's friend in particular was just comic gold!

The plot in this one was another high point. I really enjoyed how Jessica developed the romance in this one, giving it lots of time to build up and develop as the book progressed, as well as how she reveled the past. I never really was sure most of the time what had happened to Callie in the past, but as Jessica reveled piece by piece what I had occurred I was simply glued to the pages. Better yet, I loved how the majority of this book had to do with coming over life's tragedies and not letting them determine your future. All of the characters in this had their emotional baggage, but through themselves and the help of others, they really managed to do a lot of character growth, and trust me, it was an amazing part of the book to see how far they came.

The writing in this was also fabulous! As mentioned before, Jessica did a great of developing the characters and plot line. She has such a way with developing a really great contemporary read (this is especially on show with the more books I read by her), and as a huge fan of contemp, I loved seeing that! However, I kind of hate her for the ending. It was a HUGE cliffhanger so be prepared!

In all, The Coincidence of Callie and Kayden is a book I highly suggest you read this year! I have no doubt in mind that you all will love it, especially if you're a fan of the contemp genre.
