A tyrant by day, a playboy by night. That is the reputation that precedes Richard VanRyan. He lives life the way he wants, no concern for the opinion of others. He cares for no one, is completely unrepentant, and he has no desire to change his ways.
Katharine Elliott works under Richard as his PA. She despises him and his questionable ethics, but endures all the garbage he sends her way, because she needs the job. Her end goal is far more important than the daily abuse and demands she tolerates from her nasty tyrant of a boss.
Until the day, he asks her for something she never expected. A new role with a personal contract— fiancĂ©e instead of PA.
What happens when two people who loathe each other, have to live together and act as though they are madly in love?
Sparks.
That’s what happens.
Can the power of love really change a person?
Will they survive the contract?
What do you do when the one person you hate the most becomes the one person you can’t live without?
Review:
Romance is slowly becoming one of my favorite genres so when I caught wind of Melanie Moreland's The Contract I couldn't resist! It sounded amazing. Plus it contained one of my favorite types of romance - fauxmance turned real. Luckily, The Contract managed to be the perfect rainy day read. Steamy & fast paced, The Contract was a book I easily devoured on one rainy afternoon!
Richard VanRyan and Katharine Elliott may work together but it doesn't mean they have to like each other. Richard thinks Katherine is too perfect, too sweet, and far too complacent for his liking. Katy thinks Richard is arrogant and bossy - he's even made her cry on occasion. No matter how hard Richard's tried to get rid of Katy, it never works - he's stuck with her - and no matter how mad Katy gets over Richard's action, she can't give up her well paying job- she's stuck with him. Everything changes, though, the moment Richard asks her to be his fake fiancé. Katy baulks at the idea, thinking he's truly lost his mind. How could they - two people who utterly hate each other - lovingly interact? Then he offers her a salary increase - over double what she's currently making - and Katy simply can't refuse. She needs the money. However, what they haven't bet on is that this, this crazy, ridiculous contract, could ever turn into something real...
There was so much to love about this book; however, one of my absolute favorite parts was the characters!
At first, I couldn't stand Richard. He was rude and mean, just a huge jerk. I couldn't stand the way he treated Katy or the way he treated really anyone. However, as the book progressed, I really came to love him. I began to understand why he was the way he was. He also goes from being someone who never listens to others or considers their feelings to someone who will do let a friend stay over when their scared or bring food to an old lady and her pet parrot. I truly enjoyed seeing this transformation occur. As they say, finding love can sometimes bring out the best in you. I also liked seeing how good he was at his job. It was always fun to experience him "in the moment," thinking of some new way to make an ad campaign even better.
Katy, on the other hand, I loved from the first page. She was the perfect amount of sweet and kind. I admired and respected how far she would go to take care of the ones she loved - even if it meant making sacrifices. There was just so much good to this one person that it was so hard to believe that she had in fact had such a rough life. When The Contract first begins, Katy doesn't really have any good friends or close connections besides her aunt; however, over the course of the book, Katy makes amazing friends and really begins to come out of her shell, accepting that people can not only be there for her but also love her.
The romance in this was on point! I absolutely loved seeing Katy and Richard go from enemies to business partners to friends to something more (finally!). Melanie did a great job of developing their relationship - the transitioning didn't happen too fast nor too slow. Instead, it was able to keep me hooked, dying to know when they would finally see the light. The steaminess was also on high in this one! Katy and Richard just had so much chemistry. I loved how they constantly tried to one-up each other with "snotty" remarks - it caused for a lot of laughs, especially when Katy got extra feisty! Better yet, they brought out the utter best in each other.
In all, The Contract is a whole lot of fun! If you love steamy fauxmance reads, this one is for you!

How does he handle the new addition to his life?
The Baby Clause is a short continuation of Richard and Katy’s story, containing humorous glimpses into his life as a father, and how his world has changed.
A must read for all fans of The Contract!

After reading (and loving!) The Contract, I was incredibly excited to have The Baby Clause 2.0 waiting for me on my iPad.
The Baby Clause 2.0 is a short story involving the the arrival of the newest VanRyan. I read this short story easily in 15 minutes, and I thought it was great! It was fun to see Richard and Katy add an adorable little baby to their family, and I especially loved seeing Richard go nutty in trying to find Katy in the beginning - classic Richard! It was also fun to see the addition of some of the past characters I came to love in the previous book.
Basically, this book is sweet and short, and while part of me was wishing this was slightly longer, I was happy to get just a glimpse in to Katy and Richard's future!

New York Times/USA Today bestselling author Melanie Moreland, lives a happy and content life in a quiet area of Ontario with her beloved husband of twenty-seven-plus years and their rescue cat Amber. Nothing means more to her than her friends and family, and she cherishes every moment spent with them.
While seriously addicted to coffee, and highly challenged with all things computer-related and technical, she relishes baking, cooking, and trying new recipes for people to sample. She loves to throw dinner parties, and also enjoys travelling, here and abroad, but finds coming home is always the best part of any trip. Melanie delights in a good romance story with some bumps along the way, but is a true believer in happily ever after. When her head isn’t buried in a book, it is bent over a keyboard, furiously typing away as her characters dictate their creative storylines to her, often with a large glass of wine keeping her company.

These both sound really good. The transformation of Richard is something I wouldn't reading about either. Great review.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Jenea! I hope you love them when/if you read them! :)
