Quick Q and A's with Tom Dolby

Tom Dolby is the author of the author of several books for both young adults and adults. This includes his fabulous new Secret Society novel (REVIEW!) which is now out! So, without a further delay, here's Tom answering a few questions of mine.

~~~~~~~~
1) First off, I’m going to give you a couple of categories and I would like you to list your favorite.
Food?
I'm loving coconut macaroons these days.
Drink?
Iced tea.
Book?
Too hard to pick!
Author?
I'm never disappointed by F. Scott Fitzgerald.
Movie?
I saw THE TALENTED MR RIPLEY recently after not having seen it for ten years. It really is fantastic.
Season?
Fall. Nothing like a new coat!
2) Your latest book, Secret Society, will be released in September. So, can you share with us what the inspiration was behind it?
I've always wanted to write an adventure series and a secret society was the perfect background for one. What I didn't know was how much I would fall in love with my four main characters.
3) One of Secret Society’s main focus is on Secret Societies, so my questions is have you ever been involved in one? Also, did you do any research on these types of Societies while working on the book?
Well, I can't tell you that! I did do a lot of research, though, into different secret societies. I've also toured the Metropolitan Museum's Egyptian Wing with one of its curators. What has emerged in the book is an amalgamation of inspirations from the different phases of research that I've done.
4) Do you have a favorite scene in Secret Society?
I love the scene when Patch dresses up as Nick to intercept a package. It was such an interesting example of him posturing as his best friend whom he always wanted to be. It was both creepy and poignant at the same time.
5) What do you hope readers of Secret Society take from it?
I think it's really important to do your own thing, and to know that material possessions are only transitory. I think the characters all realize that they are much stronger than they thought they were.
6) Out of all the characters that you have written about which one is most like you?
I would say that Patch and Nick are probably most similar to me. But I have certain Lauren and Phoebe qualities in me as well.
7) Is there a novel out there that you just wish you had written yourself?
Well, it would be nice to have written THE GREAT GATSBY, wouldn't it?
8) Are there any other hobbies/ sports you enjoy besides writing?
I've just started getting back into running and swimming. They're great for quieting the writer's mind and generating ideas.
9) What are you currently working on?
I am working on the second book in the series, as well as another unrelated novel that is set in California.
10) Is there anything else you would like to add?
I love hearing from readers. You guys are fantastic.
  2. Great interview! I agree that swimming is perfect for quieting the mind and figuring things out. I swam competitively for years, and the best thing about it (aside from winning races) was the bits of inspiration that would come while I was finishing a long set. Nothing like working your body and mind together. :)
