Review: One Night to Fall by Kelsey Kingsley (Review & Giveaway!!)

Title: One Night to Fall
Author: Kelsey Kingsley
Genre: Contemporary Romance

About One Night to Fall:
Patrick Kinney wasn't a god. He was a parasite, and nobody worships a parasite.

Patrick Kinney was a glob of sticky, persistent peanut butter stuck to the roof of Kinsey McKenna's mouth, and she craved him.

In fact, she had been craving him ever since he set foot in River Canyon, Connecticut, when they were just three years old. And she hated it ever step of the way. (Well, sort of.)

But Patrick has a plan to fix it, and set the wrong things right. Can he turn it all around with one night and a sweet, but painful, trip down memory lane?

Fall in love again in this novella of firsts, second chances, and a little town on the coast of Connecticut, where everything meant everything.

Review:

After reading Kelsey Kingsley's debut novel Holly Freakin' Hughes, I could easily tell that Kelsey held a lot of promise in her writing and storytelling. As it turns out, I was one hundred precent correct (thankfully!).

To put it simply, One Night to Fall is unputadownable. I highly advise setting aside a good chunk of time when starting this because once you begin you won't be able to let go. It may've taken Patrick and Kinsey one night to fall, but it took me only one and a half hours to fall completely and utterly in love with their story.

One Night to Fall is a story of second chances, forgiveness, hope, and letting go physically as well as emotionally. It's hard to describe this novel in a way that gives it justice. Right now all I want to say is "READ THIS BOOK! NOT IN A MONTH, NOT IN A WEEK, NOW...THIS VERY MOMENT."

There's something so refreshingly "real" about Patrick and Kinsey. They're messy. They've made mistakes, taken paths they shouldn't have, and haven't said what they should have. They know it. They know they've done wrong, but they're set to make it right (especially in Patrick's case).

One Night to Fall is primarily told in Kinsey's POV consisting of flashbacks as well as current moments. I thought this was the perfect choice, as not only did it allow us to see Kinsey and Patrick in the moment, but it allowed us to see what started it all as well as the good and bad that their romance brought about over the years. Additionally, while novels taking place in one night are usually hit-or-miss, this was a complete hit in this case. Kelsey did such an amazing job of developing the plot and the voices, and honestly, if this hadn't taken place in just one night, it wouldn't have been nearly as amazing.

In all, I could go on about this book all day, but I won't. Instead, I'll leave you with this:

One Night to Fall is heart wrenching yet heartwarming.

It will make you smile - the kind of smile that brightens your whole entire face.
It will make you laugh - the big chuckle kind of laugh, one that comes strictly from the gut.
It will make you angry because let's face it: Patrick and Kinsey do some pretty silly things.
But overall it will make you fall hard.

I can't wait to see where Kelsey takes us next in this series.

Exclusive Excerpt:
As my mother filled Mrs. Kinney in on our ages, my eyes had fallen upon a little boy, peeking through the long legs of his red-headed father. He was blonde, like his mother, and his skin was a stark white in the glow of the summer sun, just like his dad. After all this time, I have no idea how I can so distinctly remember a little boy, not to mention so fondly. But, in my mind, I can still see the way the light breeze tousled his bowl haircut. The way his little fingers clenched to the linen of his father’s pants. The tan and scuffed sandals that poked through the lively green of their front lawn, and the oceanic eyes that seemed to focus on mine with an old soul intensity. Too old for a little boy.
“Ah, she’s three, y’say? Like our Patrick here,” Mrs. Kinney seemed to sing in her melodic voice. “Come here, Paddy. Come say hi to your new friend.”
Ladies and gentlemen, meet Patrick Kinney.
Our fates were determined in that moment: your new friend. We didn’t have a choice, did we? We didn’t stand a chance.
Patrick was pulled from behind his father with an embarrassed chuckle over his boy’s reluctance, as the strong hand pushed him along faster than his little legs could move.
“Say hello to Kinsey, son,” Mr. Kinney commanded in his own special voice, wearing a friendly smile and mussing up the little kid’s hair.
“Hello.”
I hadn’t expected a kid my age to also speak in that special voice, like his parents, but smaller and higher pitched. I also hadn’t expected his pudgy arms would wrap around my neck, pulling me into him for a hug. I remember wondering why he was hugging me, and then, God, why did I hug him?
Our parents laughed and fawned over us, as we stood there on their front lawn in a tight embrace. Neglected due to her age, because three was the age to be, Kate had run off to play with a ball that had come all the way from Ireland and the babies in Mrs. Kinney’s arms were there, but forgotten as they slept.
Nothing mattered, except for Patrick and me.

Blog Tour: Holly Freakin' Hughes by Kelsey Kingsley (Review & Giveaway!)

Summary/Cover Image from Author's Website
“People like you don’t fall in love with people like me.”

Meet Holly Hughes, a moderately successful teen advice columnist living in a studio apartment on the Upper East Side with her boyfriend Stephen. She has it all, but at the ripe age of thirty-one, she wants more. She wants to be married, she wants a family, and she’s going to have it all with Stephen.

At least, that’s what she thought, until Stephen announces he’s gay, and the domino effect of unfortunate events begins. She soon finds herself unemployed, single, and living in her sister’s house on Long Island, working as her niece’s babysitter for less than minimum wage. She’s pretty certain she’s destined to live in the Land of Mediocrity forever.

And then, her niece runs face-first into a tall, handsome man at the bookstore.
Review:

After seeing Kelsey Kingsley's Holly Freakin' Hughes on a few blogs, I decided I needed to read it. I'm always willing to try a new chick lit, romance read, and this one sounded 100% adorable. As it turns out, I enjoyed Holly Freakin' Hughes quite a bit.

Holly Freakin' Hughes starts the night Holly's boyfriend Stephen texts her with surprise dinner plans at a fancy restaurant. It's out of the blue for Stephen to make such plans, and with that in mind, Holly's mind lands on one big assumption: this must be the night he's going to propose. Finally, Holly will go from being Holly freakin' Hughes to Holly freakin' Keller. Holly couldn't be more ecstatic. However, Stephen doesn't have wedding bells or a ring in mind; instead, he confesses to Holly the one thing she least suspects: he's gay and leaving her for his boss. Holly's shocked, how could Stephen - the love of her life, the man she thought she'd grow old with - break her heart like that. Before she knows it, Holly is left single, jobless, and homeless. The only person willing to help her back on her feet is her younger sister. Now watching her sister's kid & trading in advice columns for story times, Holly's miserable, so miserable in fact that she never expects to find a new man...that is until Brandon lands in her path.

Some parts of me really liked Holly and Brandon and other parts of me really didn't like them.

Throughout the story, Holly's down on her luck and understandably sad, angry, and depressed over it. I felt really bad for Holly. To have your whole word turned upside down like that? I'd be just as a mess as she was, and it was hard for me to see her down so low. Here's this girl who has so much to offer - she's smart, attractive, kind yet she feels like she has nothing left to offer. However, this is also where her character went wrong for me...I felt for most of the book she just wouldn't make the best out of the situation. Instead, of viewing the glass half full, she tended to view it half empty, and even though parts of me understood, other parts of me were annoyed. There's only so much wallowing you can do, in my opinion, before you need to pick up the pieces and move on. Thankfully, over the course of the book, she improved and became better than ever, but man, sometimes it was a hard road to watch.

Like Holly, Brandon's had his fair share of a relationship gone terribly wrong. Due to that, he's cold, untrusting, and almost completely closed off to the world; however, deep down there's a guy just dying to love and be loved again. Similar to Holly, I was a times torn over Brandon's progress. Sometimes he did really well, but other times he made such rash decisions, especially when it came to admitting his feelings to Holly. While parts of me liked that it brought a slow-burn aspect to their relationship, other parts of me just wanted it to happen already.

The plot in Holly Freakin' Hughes was rather addictive. As mentioned above, there's a slow burn romance at play between Holly and Brandon, and for the most part, I enjoyed watching it unfold. It was interesting to see them go from strangers to friends and finally to something more. There shared time at the bookstore/coffee shop were some of my favorite moments in the book. I just loved the energy and atmosphere that setting brought to the story - also it brought to the surface Holly's love of romance books which gave her major points in my eyes! I also liked the addition of Holly's family and friends...Esther, Holly's sarcastic, cranky neighbor was probably my favorite out of the entire bunch. Now that's a woman who speaks her mind and knows exactly what she wants!

The writing in this was good. Kelsey did a good job of switching between POVs switching between POVs as well as using them to build some suspense and tension. As mentioned before, she did a great job of establishing settings in this one.

Overall, while I wasn't the biggest fan of the main characters at times, Holly Freakin' Hughes is still a fun, fast paced read perfect for a lazy weekend. I look forward to seeing how Kelsey develops as a storyteller in her future novels!
