Quick Qs and As with Chloe Neill

Chloe Neill is the author of two series- Dark Elite and Chicagoland Vampires- that I'm looking forward to reading. Though, without a further ado here's my interview with Chloe.

Can you describe Firespell: A Dark Elite Novel in four words?

Lily finds Chicago magic.

Are you similar to your main character Lily in any ways?
Hmm. We're both pretty curious, probably to a fault. We both appreciate good shoes. We're both vegetarians. We both enjoy drawing, although I haven't done it regularly in many, many years.

What made you choose to have the Dark Elite series take place in a boarding school?

I always wanted to go to boarding school! I grew up before Harry Potter, when boarding school was a very exotic but rarely-discussed idea. And in the context of kids and magic, it simplifies things considerably if they live where they practice their magic.

How did the title Firespell come to be?
I decided that the power discussed in book 1 would be called "Firespell," and the title came from there!

Do you have a favorite scene or line from Firespell? If so, would you mind sharing with us a bit about it?
I really like the scene in the "city room," as Lily calls it. I thought it was a pretty unique situation in which Lily found herself, and I liked that we get to see her solving a puzzle on her own.

Is there a specific message you hope teens take away from Firespell?

Two things, I think. First, as Shakespeare said, "to thine own self be true." Second, parents do occasionally know best, even if we can't fathom their motives at the time.

Was there a specific moment in you life where you went, “I want to be an author!” or was it something that evolved over time?

There was a specific moment in 2005 when I sat down and started writing my first novel. :) I'd never written before then, so it was a very out of the blue moment for me.

What part of the writing process do you find the most challenging?

The last couple of rounds of editing are exhausting; by then, I've read the book too many times to count and I'm sick of looking at it.

Out of your two series- Chicagoland Vampires and Dark Elite- do you have a favorite one to write? Or do you enjoy writing them both equally?

They are both equally enjoyable--and equally challenging--to write.

What type of setting do you write in?

I have a day job, so I try to put in at least a couple of hours at night after work and before I go to bed, and then as much time as I can on the weekends. That means I usually write on the couch with a laptop.

If you could have any other job besides an author what would it be?

I already have one! :)

What’s up next for you book-wise?

I'm currently writing the second book in my Dark Elite series (the follow-up to Firespell), and the third book in the

Chicagoland Vampires series, Twice Bitten, will be released in July!

Thanks so much for having me today! I hope everyone has a chance to check out FIRESPELL!

  1. I liked Firespell a lot. Lily has a distinct voice and character. I like that she is smart, sarcastic, courageous, and very loyal to her new friends. I am eagerly waiting for the next one in the series.

I also enjoy the Chicagoland Vampires series and am glad to hear that I only have to wait until July for the next one.
