Title: Hearts Unleashed
Author: Paris Wynters
Genre: Contemporary Romance

About Hearts Unleashed:
After an IED ends his military career, Major John Rathborne struggles to re-adjust to civilian life. Haunted by the death of his brother-in-arms, John’s determined to find his canine partner, Koda, now retired and re-homed. The last place he expects to find her is on a ranch in Absarokee, Montana, where he lands a foreman job and a chance at a new start. Unfortunately, ranch manager Katie Locke just wants the new guy gone. She can’t shake the trauma from the night she was attacked, and God knows she doesn’t need some stranger invading her safe haven. She can’t ignore John’s brooding presence, and even her dog shares an uncanny bond with him. But when her father suffers a heart attack, Katie has no option but to put her differences with John aside to save the future of Three Keys Ranch. As they slowly find a common bond and their attraction heats up, both realize they must heal from their past wounds if they want to explore a relationship. But John hasn’t told Katie about certain parts of his past—including that he and Koda had been partners in Afghanistan. Then he learns someone is out to destroy the ranch, and Katie is in their crosshairs. Has John opened his heart too late?

Review:
I started Paris Wynters' Hearts Unleashed when I was going through a bit of a reading rut. All my previous books had left me feeling underwhelmed, and I wanted nothing more than for that to to change. So I figured what better way to fix it then with a romance that sounded equal parts emotional and adorable.

The result? From the first page, I was completely immersed in the story of John, Katie, and, most importantly, Koda! Hearts Unleashed had me smiling, laughing, tearing up, and even feeling a little frustrated, as John and Kaite? Yeah, loved them dearly, but boy where they utterly bullheaded sometimes.

John and Katie are what I would call complicated characters. Both having been through traumatic experiences (Katie with an attack she barely survived and John loosing a brother and even some of his own life to an IED) and suffering from PTSD in varying ways. Both have come to live there lives by being as bottled up as possible regarding their emotions. For Katie, that means staying close to home, and only trusting her father, and for John, that means putting all his worries and stress into the bottle. I have to admit that at first I didn't really like either one of them that much. I hated the way that Katie treated John. I completely understood why she'd be so unwilling to accept new people into her life, but goodness was she just plain out rude and cold to him - so much so that it had me cringing a bit at times. John, on the other hand, was likable on the surface, but John was so unwilling to see that even with his best friend's loss, he still had a life worth fighting for.

As the book progressed, John and Katie slowly come together and start making some real progress. I loved that for the majority of the book that this relationship was almost completely platonic and friend like. Sure, there was some sexual tension building (have to get the romance going!) but a bigger part of this book revolved around two people - two that were more alike than they'd like to admit - fighting their demons and learning to love themselves again. I loved this transition, and I especially loved seeing both Katie and John become happier and healthier because of it.

The plot in this was 100% addictive AND there was even a bit of a mystery involved! One of my favorite parts of Hearts Unleashed was seeing the daily activities at Katie's ranch. I enjoyed the characters it brought to the mix (Katie's dad and their longtime vet) as well as the little pieces of drama and community that came form such a close-knit group. As hinted to above, I also loved seeing the slow-burning, enemies to friends to lovers romance play out. It had me hooked the whole way through, dying to know WHEN Katie and John would FINALLY get off their high horses and get together! Lastly, the mystery! I don't want to say too much about it, but it was the perfect little add-on, and I especially loved how Paris perfectly intertwined into other parts of the book. Some parts of me saw the bad guy coming but other parts of me was still slightly shocked.

In all, Hearts Unleashed is the perfect romance read. Mixing together an emotional and romantic storyline as well as an adorable dog that you can't help but love, Hearts Unleashed will have you staying up way past your bed time, saying "one more chapter, one more chapter!" I simply can't wait to see what Paris writes next!

After their last mission, he and Koda had been unceremoniously dumped from the military. He’d wanted to adopt her, but by the time he’d taken care of the red tape surrounding his return to civilian life, she was gone, assigned to a civilian family. He undid his belt, leaning back in the driver’s seat as a wave of exhaustion hit him. He’d been holding out for this day ever since he’d left the hospital. Ever since Fort Bragg messed up and adopted Koda out to a civilian family. Handlers always have first rights. Unable to trace her adoptive family through his military ties, he hadn’t given up. He’d turned to social media in an attempt to find his indispensable K9 partner. John closed his eyes, picturing the image he’d plugged into Facebook of him and Koda together. She lolled on the roof of a Humvee, tongue hanging to the side of her mouth as if she was grinning. He leaned up against the vehicle right next to her—the same vehicle that was destroyed by a cheaply made Improvised Explosive Device just a few weeks later. He knew his chances were slim. His therapy sessions over the last three months revolved around his ability to handle never finding her. And after nine months of searching, he’d come close to losing hope. Until today. Shutting his eyes, he replayed the moment when she bounded up to him, and he knew—knew she hadn’t forgotten him any more than he could forget her. He felt her rough tongue scrape his cheek and laughed. I finally found her. But he could still lose her. He winced, remembering that the Lockes were her legal owners now. And while Mitch was a nice guy—maybe even a little too nice—his daughter was another story altogether. His mouth soured. Katie might look delicate, but her sidelong glances had been sharp as nails. She’d sized him up pretty quickly. He could make no mistakes around her—not if he wanted to be near Koda. It was clear from her outburst that his former partner was much more to her than a ranch dog. There was no way she’d give Koda up without a fight. Hell, she’d probably even fire him to keep him away from the dog. He shifted in his seat. He needed this job. Thinking of Katie brought up a spark of annoyance. Her possessiveness irritated him, even if she didn’t know Koda was far more than just a dog to him. He could not see her taking the news that Koda was his canine partner well at all—hell, she’d barely tolerated him standing in their barn. Still, I know Koda’s safe and happy—and working at the ranch, I’ll see her every day. It was enough—for now. Like hail on a glass pane, the drumming of his fingers was as relentless as it was loud, trying to still his mind. Each thump on the dashboard echoed the tumultuous thudding of his heartbeat. He couldn’t shake off her words—or her soft, inviting lips.

Review: Me, Him, Them, and It by Caela Carter

Summary/Cover Image From Publisher's Website:
ME: Evelyn, closeted good girl turned bad.
HIM: Todd, her supposed Friend with Benefits.
THEM: Her cold, distant parents.
IT: The baby that's growing inside her.

When Evelyn decided to piss off her parents with a bad reputation, she wasn't planning to ruin her valedictorian status. She also wasn't planning to fall for Todd-the guy she was just using for sex. And she definitely wasn't planning on getting pregnant. When Todd turns his back on her, Evelyn's not sure where to go. Can a distant mother, a cheating father, an angry best friend, and a (thankfully) loving aunt with adopted daughters of her own help Evelyn make the heart-wrenching decisions that follow?
Review:

Me, Him, Them and It has been in my TBR pile longer than I'd like to admit, and recently, I decided that I needed to finally read it. The result? Me, Him, Them, and It truly managed to surprise me in the best way possible.

Everything began to fall apart in Evelyn's life the day her dad announced he was leaving his family for his dentist. Suddenly, her home turned into just a house, she lost the one parent she could truly relate to, and her mother crawled back into her shell, using her job as a constant excuse for everything. Evelyn figured the only way to truly get revenge on her parents, and maybe, just maybe, get them to pay attention to her was to become a "bad girl." She drank, she smoked, she went to parties, and she started up a friends-with-benefits relationship. Everything changes, though, the minute a regular visit at Planned Parenthood brings about a positive pregnancy test. Evelyn isn't just Evelyn anymore - she's Evelyn plus a little "bean." Evelyn doesn't know what to do. It doesn't help that Todd, the baby daddy, will talk to her about anything but the baby, or that her mom wants to ship her away, or that her best friend is angry with her than ever. Evelyn is at a loss so when she's given a way out - move in with her eccentric yet loving aunt - she goes for it. What she doesn't fully realize, though, is that even in a different world she's still going to have make some tough decisions...

One of my favorites parts of this book was the narration. It's split up into several different sections - one counting down the days into her decisions, another counting how long into her pregnancy she is, and a couple revisiting the past (i.e. how Todd and her got together, etc.). It was very journal like in a sense, and most importantly, it felt very personal. I was really able to get to know Evelyn well as well as connect to her story.

From the first page, it was incredibly easy to see how lost Evelyn was. Here's this girl that used to the definition of a good girl - she got straight As, ran track, dressed nicely - but now is the complete opposite of that. It was simply heartbreaking, she was literally and figuratively breaking in front of my eyes for a large part of the story. My favorite aspect of her character, though, was watching her transform - to accept responsibility for her actions, to finally demand that she should matter in her parents eyes, to open up to the people who so desperately wanted to know her. It was amazing transformation. I especially liked the bond she began to form with "bean." It was sweet. It made me smile. However, it also managed to break my heart time and time again.

I also really enjoyed the entire cast of characters. Her aunts and two cousins added a great family aspect to the book - it was adorable to see the little girls, in particular, interact with Evelyn. I also enjoyed the addition of her teen pregnancy support group. It was interesting to see how Caela intertwined other's dealings with teen pregnancy within it - it showed that truly no situation is the same. I had a lot of mixed feelings over Evelyn's parents. I felt that they were incredibly selfish in some respects; however, I did see that they did begin to try.

The plot in this mainly revolves around Evelyn's pregnancy and the many questions and decisions that entails. I thought it was great that Caela had Evelyn explore every route she could take - abortion, adoption, keeping the baby. I especially liked how never once was the book pushy about one particular option; instead, you Evelyn decide over the course of the book which one is for her.

In all, Me, Him, Them and It is raw and heartbreaking. It punches you in the gut hard. Mostly importantly, it's a beautifully told story about how sometimes the hardest decisions, the ones that want to make you want to tear out your hear and be a child again, are the ones that make you the person you are - for better or for worse.

There, thanks to a carefully planned schedule, she leads a double life: spy trainee Below and normal teenager Above. Review:

My initial thoughts after finishing The Year of Four?

1. THIS BOOK IS SO BLEEPING GOOD!
2. I NEED THE NEXT BOOK. COME ON KINDLE LOAD FASTER!
3. NYA JADE, WHERE HAVE YOUR AMAZING BOOKS BEEN ALL MY LIFE?

Basically, I ADORED this book! It's been a long time since I've found a YA fantasy to be as unputdownable as The Year of Four was, and in some ways, it managed to fill the hole in my heart that formed when Richelle Mead's Vamprie Academy series ended (and trust me when I say that's a hard thing to accomplish!)

One of my favorite aspects about this book was the world building. Nya Jade did such an amazing job of setting up the Shaper world. Not only did she include an epic twist on history (hint: it involves Pompeii!) but she included a private school, a dramatic court system, cunning royals, AND a bone-chilling enemy. I loved the level of detail she put into creating Phoebe's world. It truly made the book come alive. Because of the amazing world building, the characters were more fleshed out, the plot lines were more developed, etc.

Moving on, I adored the main characters in this; however, I have to admit Phoebe was my absolute favorite! There was just so much to love about her. She was smart, brave, and resilient. She's faced horrible things, but instead of letting them bring her down, she only became wiser and stronger because of it. I especially liked the transformation Phoebe goes through over the course of the book. When we're first introduced to her, she's never really been close to anyone besides her dad and grandpa, but as the book progresses, she begins to come out of her shell, befriending some kick-a$$ characters AND starting up a slow-burning romance with a cute and charming boy. However, the characteristic I loved the most about Phoebe was that she could be kick-a$$ all on her own. Sure, sometimes she got help from her love interesting and/or friends, but most of the time, Phoebe was being daring and brave all on her own, which I admired greatly!

I don't want to say much about the plot, because I don't want to spoil anything. But I will say it's one that will keep you guessing the whole way through! Seriously, just when you think you have everything figured out Nya throws in a crazy twist and BAM you're right back to square one. Additionally, the plot had the perfect balance of action and romance - enough to appease fans of both of areas!

In all, I could go on and on but I'll end here: The Year of Four is spellbinding, fast paced, and romantic debut! If you're a fan of Vampire Academy and/or Hex Hall you simply must check this one out!

The Blood of Kings: A Phoebe Pope Novel Book Two
Author: Nya Jade
Publisher: Dreamwell Publishing
Publication Date: April 14, 2017
Genres: Paranormal, Young Adult
The thrilling, un-put-downable sequel to The Year of Four.

According to the press, Phoebe Pope and teen movie star Colten Chase are no longer an item—which is just how the happy new couple like it. And yet there’s trouble in paradise . . .

Phoebe is haunted by dreams that show her things she can’t possibly know about—including a pact between Colten and a wanted assassin. In the daylight, she struggles to keep a newly emerging power hidden, even as her hands itch to wield it.

Meanwhile, in the wake of their escape from a Vigo crèche, Phoebe and her fellow Hyphas study under lock and key at the Campus Below. As the foursome wait to see who among them will fulfill the prophecy, someone dear to Phoebe is kidnapped by a powerful Vigo determined to use her to spy on the Shaper royalty. When the Hyphas are called to the Royal Court, Phoebe refuses to heed warnings of imminent danger for she will do whatever it takes to rescue her loved one.

But once at court, nothing is as it first appears. A sinister force controls some royals, while others whisper behind closed doors about forbidden alliances. And as Phoebe draws on her courage to complete the task set by her enemy, she makes a startling discovery—one that upends her father’s memory.

With dangerous conspiracies surfacing, Phoebe must uncover what the Royal Shapers really want from her, and decide whether there’s room for Colten in her unraveling life.
Review:

After racing through The Year of Four, I couldn't wait to start The Blood of Kings, the second book in the series. I was beyond excited to see what adventures Phoebe and the rest of the Hyphas would get into next, and I especially couldn't wait to see how Phoebe and Colten's romance developed. However, a small part of me was scared that I wouldn't love this book nearly as much as the first.

The result? Just when I thought Nya Jade couldn't possibly top the amazingness that was The Year of Four, The Blood of Kings showed up and blew me away! Full of action, suspense, and jaw-dropping-no-that-DIDN'T-just-happen moments, The Blood of Kings doesn't just avoid the sophomore slump it completely surpasses any trace of it!

Just like with The Year of Four, I loved Phoebe. In this book, she begins to dive more into her abilities and what they mean for her future. I enjoyed seeing her test and use her powers, especially when they brought her into contact with some amazing mentors. Phoebe also became even more strong and fearless. She faces a lot of internal and external conflict throughout The Blood of Kings, and while most people would've gone running and screaming the other way, Phoebe ALWAYS took it head-on, no matter how tough and scary the situation got. I also loved seeing her friendships and relationship develop within this. Her bond with the other Hyphas became one of my favorite parts of the book - the four of them were thrown together with almost nothing in common yet they've managed to become this adorable little family. I loved seeing them confide and put trust in one another - it added such a great "family" element to the book.

Again, I do't want to say too much about the plot, because it's something you just need to experience for yourself. However, just like with The Year of Four, this one keeps you guessing all the way through! I loved the increase of court drama as well as the bigger look into the prophecies and tensions occurring between the Vigos and Shapers.

And the ending? OH. MY. GOSH. WHERE. IS. THE. NEXT. BOOK.

In all, I have so much love for this series and author! I seriously can't wait to see what adventure Nya takes us on next!

Excerpt from:

THE YEAR OF FOUR

A PHOEBE POPE NOVEL (Book 1)

by NYA JADE

The instant Phoebe stepped into the Great Hall, the scent of sweet spices wafted into her nostrils. She stood still, trying to absorb the scene before her. A large, two-story dome glistened at the center of the cavernous room—a glass structure embellished with several golden images of a lion’s head. Countless ornamental glass bottles ablaze with firelight formed a circle around the base of the dome, washing the room in warm light. Inside, long tables, garnished with white moon flowers, had been arranged in three rows in front of a wide stage. The festive tables were packed with hundreds of students whose backs faced Phoebe and Hayley.
Phoebe elbowed Hayley. “Amazing, huh?”
“Unreal,” Hayley gushed. “Now what?”
“Over there.” Phoebe nodded toward the only two empty seats at the last row of tables near the dome’s entrance.
Hayley charged forward, pulling Phoebe along with her.
“Don’t look,” Hayley whispered, “but we’re getting the evil eye.”
“Crap.” Phoebe cringed at the disapproving glare she got from some faculty members. Great first impression, she thought.
“Next,” a commanding male baritone bellowed, as Phoebe and Hayley settled into their seats. “I call before you Xavier Reno.”
Phoebe’s eyes followed an elaborate marble staircase, one of a pair that spiraled upward to a balcony that was situated under the dome’s ceiling and to the right side of the stage. There, a middle-aged man with a prominent aquiline nose and deep sunken eyes stood peering down at the crowd. He wore a purple toga that swathed him in silken waves. From her father’s description, Phoebe knew at once that this man must be Professor Yori, Headmaster of the Campus Below.
Phoebe turned her attention to the stage where a male student draped in an ivory toga rose from a bench. After a nervous glance at a blond, heavyset girl next to him, also in a toga, who gave an encouraging smile, the boy moved forward, tugging up fistfuls of cloth to prevent tripping as he walked. He arrived at center stage, and cautiously picked up a luminous object from a round, gilded table.
Hayley gasped, shifting in her seat for a better view. “Utaviium,” she said, faster than Phoebe could think it. And it was. Thin and cylindrical, Utaviium was a pale blue crystal enchanted to capture and hold a single bolt of lightning. It was beautiful to look at; both of the girls sat transfixed, focused on the frenetic light within the crystal.
“Xavier, show yourself!” Professor Yori declared.
In the moment of those words’ utterance, several things happened at once. The boy’s toga slipped to the floor. He smashed the Utaviium at his feet. A massive wave of energy rippled through the dome, and for an instant, Phoebe was blinded by the intensity of its accompanying light. When her vision recovered, a giant, red falcon stood where the boy had been.
Spreading his bejeweled fingers across the balcony’s railing, Professor Yori spoke down to the majestic bird, “Son of Osiah, rise!” Phoebe watched a pair of iridescent wings unfold sleekly, wings that from tip to tip spanned the width of the stage. The falcon lifted and lowered them slowly. The students erupted with applause as he took silent flight, faltered for a moment, then shot upward to a long perch suspended from the dome’s ceiling by gold chains. All heads peered up as, beating his wings inward to steady himself, the falcon took his place on the perch next to a silver eagle and a black hawk.
Phoebe glanced to her side. She saw Hayley’s eyes ablaze with her own excitement. Never before had she seen the mind-thrilling spectacle of a first time Conversion.
