Review: The Tombs by Deborah Schaumberg

The Tombs by Deborah Schaumberg
Release Date: February 20, 2018
Publisher: HarperTeen
Genre: YA, Historical, Fantasy
Source: ARC was provided by the publisher via Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review
New York, 1882. A dark, forbidding city, and no place for a girl with unexplainable powers.

Deborah Schaumberg’s gripping debut takes readers on a breathless trip across a teeming turn-of-the-century New York and asks the question: Where can you hide in a city that wants you buried?

Sixteen-year-old Avery Kohl pines for the life she had before her mother was taken. She fears the mysterious men in crow masks who locked her mother in the Tombs asylum for being able to see what others couldn’t.

Avery denies the signs in herself, focusing instead on her shifts at the ironworks factory and keeping her inventor father out of trouble. Other than listening to secondhand tales of adventure from her best friend, Khan, an ex-slave, and caring for her falcon, Seraphine, Avery spends her days struggling to survive.

Like her mother’s, Avery’s powers refuse to be contained. When she causes a bizarre explosion at the factory, she has no choice but to run from her lies, straight into the darkest corners of the city.

Avery must embrace her abilities and learn to wield their power—or join her mother in the cavernous horrors of the Tombs. And the Tombs has secrets of its own: strange experiments are being performed on “patients”...and no one knows why.
Review:

Deborah Schaumberg's The Tombs first landed on my radar because of its stunning cover. Then I read the synopsis and a decision was made: I needed it and pronto! As it turns out, The Tombs is a magical and rich debut. It's hard not to become completely enthralled by Avery's journey as well as rooting for her every step of the way.

There's many things Deborah does well here; however, one of the best is the descriptions. It was so incredibly easy to be transported to New York City, 1882. I could picture Avery's world perfectly - the factory, her apartment, the tombs, etc. The tombs actually offered one of my favorite settings: a greenhouse where Avery discovers more answers to her problems! The greenhouse was so cool. I wish it was real so I could go and visit it.

Additionally, Deborah did a fantastic job of fleshing out the story lines. I'll admit this isn't the most fast paced book ever. Deborah takes her time building up the world as well as Avery's past and current struggles; however, I was never once bothered by the speed. I eagerly ate up the descriptions, and I loved getting to know Avery better. More importantly, when things did speed up, I felt prepared. I knew what was going on - and had some very big questions!-and I couldn't wait to see Avery kick butt!

Avery, the main character here, was likable and easy to root for. When the book first begins, Avery has grown use to blending into the background. It's easier for both her father and her that way; however, while Avery may be quiet, she's no pushover by any means. She's strong and powerful, more so than she even thinks. The scenes were she helped her fellow factory workers pulled at my heartstrings. Avery would risk anything for their safety, and that made her even more lovable in my opinion. Additionally, over the course of the book Avery's experiences a coming-of-age. She wants to get to the bottom of her mother's illness, Avery wants to know if she's like her. This brings about many struggles: between Avery and her father, between Avery and her best friend/trusted companion, and even between Avery and herself. It was interesting to see her face this struggle - should she leave it all alone or challenge everything - and I was very happy with the end result.

Now for the one thing that dropped The Tombs down a star: the romance. There's two potential love interests - Avery's best friend & the boy Avery shared a kiss with years ago. Normally, love triangles don't bother me, but I just didn't like it here. I thought Avery's best friend was the better choice; however, she constantly felt drawn to this boy she knew almost nothing about (cue insta-love). It just didn't work for me - I wanted more for Avery, I wanted more for her best friend.

Regardless, The Tombs is a wonderful debut, perfect for YA readers who love their historical fiction with a touch of fantasy and magic. I can't wait to see where Deborah goes next. I'm personally hoping for a sequel!

4 stars!!

Review: A Perilous Passion by Elizabeth Keysian

Summary/Cover Image from Publisher's Website:
Miss Charlotte Allston is unwittingly ensnared in a sinister web of traitors and spies when she is literally swept off her feet by a handsome stranger on the beach. Fiercely determined to redeem his honor after a humiliating military defeat, the Earl of Beckport is living incognito, hunting a band of smugglers at the center of a French plot to invade England.

The enigmatic Miss Allston instantly becomes a person of interest to the earl...and not just in the smuggling case. Passion flares swift and hot between the two. But when her attempts to help with his secret mission only endanger it, he must question where her loyalty truly lies.

Stunned by the sudden revelation that the woman he is falling for is the daughter of a notorious smuggler, Beckport feels duty-bound to report her. But then Charlotte is captured by the very traitor he's after, forcing the earl to decide between redemption...and love.
Review:

For some reason historical romances always tend to be hit or miss for me - they either fall into the "love" category or the "meh" category. Going into A Perilous Passion, however, I was getting incredibly good vibes. The characters were charming, the romance was strong, and the spy subplot was suspenseful. Unfortunately, the longer the book went on, the more it began to loose its steam.

A Perilous Passion contains two point-of-views: Charlotte Allston and Rafe, the Earl of Beckport.

Charlotte Allston is smart, slightly cunning, and unapologetic. She loves adventure and forbidden romance much to her mother's dismay. For the most part, I liked Charlotte. I loved how she was always getting into trouble, especially when Rafe was involved. I also admired that she wasn't afraid to go against her family's wishes, especially when it came to finding love.

When Rafe is first introduced, he's under a pseudonym, as he's trying to redeem himself after an unfortunate sneezing incident by bringing down a smuggling ring. Rafe is the type of awkward that is so charming it's hard not to utterly love. His sneezing incident brought tears from my eyes because I was laughing so hard. I also loved his interactions with Charlotte - he tried so hard not to get wrapped up in her and her ideals but failed time and time again.

The plot in A Perilous Passion revolved under Charlotte and Rafe's "forbidden" romance, Rafe's spying, and Charlotte's family's own troubles with the law. At stated above, I truly enjoyed all these story lines at first - I easily slid through the first 100 or so pages. After that mark, though, my interest began to dwindle.

There were several reasons for this. For one, I didn't enjoy the introduction of Charlotte's former flame - he was annoying, whiny, and added nothing I found enjoyable to the story.  Additionally, towards the middle everything was going in circles without much advancement, and worse yet, I felt that some plot lines were just thrown right out the door (like Charlotte's aunt's friendship with the apothecary - what ever resulted from that?) or solved way too simply (i.e. Rafe's smuggling ring operation and Charlotte's family issues). Basically  I was left feeling underwhelmed and even a bit annoyed. It's always the worst when a book starts of good and then goes off the cliff.

Overall, A Perilous Passion is a solid 3 star read - it has its pros as well as its cons. I feel like historical romance lovers may enjoy it; however, it doesn't top my list of recommendations.

Blog Tour: Only for You by Melissa Foster (Review & Giveaway!)

Today I'm excited to be part of the blog tour for Melissa Foster's Only For You!

Title: Only For You
Author: Melissa Foster
Genre: Contemporary Romance

About Only For You:
Single mom Bridgette Dalton doesn’t have time to stop and smell the roses—not even in her own flower shop. But that doesn’t mean she hasn’t noticed Bodhi Booker. Her ruggedly handsome next-door neighbor would be the perfect candidate for a no-strings fling. Having loved and lost, Bridgette’s not ready to hand over her heart…but she could use a distraction.

Bodhi has one rule: never leave anyone behind. As a special operative, he knows that each new mission is more dangerous than the last. He’s never made a promise of forever to a woman, not even to the beautiful widow who has him tied in knots. And if there were anyone who could tempt him into putting down roots, it would be Bridgette and her adorable son.

But as his next deployment nears, they make a startling discovery. Their passion, meant only for the here and now, might already be blossoming into something more…
Review:

I've been wanting to read one of Melissa Foster's books for a while now, so when the opportunity arose to take part in the blog tour Only for You, the second book in the Sugar Lake series, I instantly said yes. As it turns out, I'm so glad I did! Only for You is adorable, heartwarming, and most importantly, super high on the steam scale.

Only for You introduces the alternating perspectives of Bridgette Dalton and Bodhi Booker.

Over the course of Only for You, Bridgette takes on several important roles: supermom, business owner, sister, and daughter. Each role introduced a different side to Bridgette, and I loved seeing them all come together. Bridgette is independent, smart, and savvy. She'll do anything to allow her son to have a nice, happy childhood, even if it means denying herself the possibility of a new boyfriend. I always have such a respect for single moms, and that respect was on high when it came to Bridgette. However, I did wish she'd let loose and allow herself true happiness again, especially when it came to happiness with her hottie neighbor. Thankfully, as the book progressed, Bridgette did let loose and find a new level of happiness; however, she stayed true to who she was and that's what I admired the most.

I always love mysterious, gruff, and good-looking heroes, but when you add in romance book lover to those characteristics, my heart is beating frantically! To put it simply, Bodhi was a gem. On the outside, he gives off a tough-as-nails look, but on the inside, he's the ultimate softie. It was heartwarming to see him take on a fatherly role with Bridgette's son, and I especially loved when they'd team up against her. Plus, as mentioned before, I loved that he was a romance book lover. It was such a cute addition to an already lovable lead.

The plot in this mainly revolved around Bodhi and Bridgette's romance. I thought Melissa Foster did a fantastic job of building up there romance. It wasn't too quick nor too slow, and more importantly, it felt believable. I also liked that it wasn't perfect. Over the course of the book, Bodhi and Bridgette deal with their own personal issues that hold them back from falling in love again. I thought Melissa did a great job of making those issues realistic yet not too overly dramatic.

There were two aspects, however, that held me back from truly loving Only for You. For one, I wish more time had been given to Bodhi's career. It was such an important part of who he was yet little of the plot revolved around it. Even at the end the problems involving it were thrown to the side and fixed almost too easily. Second, sometimes it was hard to keep all the side characters straight. Now this may because I started the series with book 2; however, at first Bridgette's sisters blended together, making it hard sometimes to remember who was who.

In all, Only for You is yet another enjoyable romance read! This may be my first book by Melissa but it certainly won't be my last.

Blog Tour: The Heartbreak Cure by Amanda Ashby (Review & Giveaway!)

The Heartbreak Cure by Amanda Ashby
Publication Date: December 4, 2017
Publisher: Entangled Teen: Crush

Summary/Cover Image from Publisher's Website:
How to get over a heartbreak:

Step one: Eat your body weight in brownies.

Step two: Throw yourself into your dreams of becoming a famous writer.

Step three: Beg your (hottie) ex-neighbor to act as your fake boyfriend.

Step four: Skip step three unless you’re ready for some serious fallout.

After being dumped and humiliated over the summer, Cat Turner does what any sane girl would do. She asks bad boy Alex Locke to be her fake boyfriend and show the world (and her editor at the school newspaper) that she's fine. Problem is, the more time she spends with Alex, the more she risks getting her heart broken. For real this time.

Disclaimer: This Entangled Teen Crush book contains a swoony bad boy who will melt your heart, brownies, and witty banter. One, two, or all three might prove addictive...
Review:

I've read several of Amanda Ashby's books in the past (Fairy Bad Day and You Had Me at Halo), and I've always enjoyed how sweet and fun they are. Therefore, when I heard about her newest release, The Heartbreak Cure, I instantly added it to my TBR.

The Result? The Heartbreak Cure is as sweet and delicious as a sugar cookie!

The Heartbreak Cure introduces us to Cat Turner and Alex Locke.

When The Heartbreak Cure begins Cat is suffering the ultimate heartbreak. She's sad, depressed, and feeling just a tad bit dumb. She's drowning her sorrows in ice cream, writing angry scenes, and watching sappy movies; however, she refuses to let sadness last forever, and instead, jumps full force into a new school year with the help of her best friend and her neighbor turned fake boyfriend. From that moment - when Cat decided to move on - I knew I was gong to like her. I love when characters don't let the bad get them down! Better yet, I enjoyed seeing so many different sides to Cat in The Heartbreak Cure. She was a great friend, an innovative newspaper writer, and a loving daughter; however, I also liked that she struggled at times with saying/doing the right thing, especially when it came to her budding romance with Alex. It added realness to her character.

Alex, on the other hand, has been dealt the short stick more than once in life; however, there's something about Cat that makes him want to come out of his shell and live again. Alex is the ultimate boy best friend turned love interest. I loved how sweet and tender he was with Cat, especially right after her break-up. He had a heart of gold. Additionally, I love/hated that Amanda Ashby showed the struggles he faced in the book. I loved them because they allowed me to get to know and understand him, and I hated them at times because, gosh, I just wanted him to realize that he could have a happy ending.

As hinted to above, the plot in this was very sweet. I'm always a sucker for a fake relationship turned real. I thought Amanda did a great job of developing Cat and Alex's relationship, and better yet, I loved that it wasn't the only focuses in the story. It was fun to see Cat's newspaper assignments, Alex's path to redemption, Cat's best friend finding love of her own, Alex's grandmother's meddling ways, and Cat and her mom's Gilmore Girls like bond.

In all, The Heartbreak Cure is yet another great addition to the Entangled Crush line. However, be warned: you'll be craving brownies the whole way through!

Review:

The Truth Beneath the Lies comes highly recommend by Karen McManus, the author behind one of my FAVORITE books of 2017. Therefore, it's no surprise I eagerly devoured The Truth Beneath the Lies as soon as it arrived on my iPad.

The Result? The Truth Beneath the Lies is adventurous, daring, intense. The dual POV makes this book unputadownable - there wasn't a time in which I wasn't desperately trying to connect the two POVs. While I did figure out the big mystery before the end of the book, there were still some small surprises that managed to rock me to my core.

The Truth Beneath the Lies is a book that is incredibly hard to review, as (1) I don't want to give anything anyway and (2) it's just one of those books you just have to experience for yourself. Therefore, I'm going to list a few of my favorite things about it:
  1. The Dual POV - Sometimes dual POVs work and sometimes they don't. Luckily, it worked very well here. Amanda used it to her advantage, and it's the main reason I couldn't put this one down. Throughout the book all I wanted to do was hug Betsy and Kayla and tell them everything was going to be okay, that things couldn't possibly get any worse. They are two girls who've been beaten down numerous times, and left to put together the surplus of messy pieces.
  2. The Writing - Amanda Searcy certainly knows how to write a good mystery thriller if this book is any indication. She did a fantastic job of building up suspense, keeping the two POVS separate and distinct, and most importantly, bringing the story together in a way that was surprising and slightly mind-blowing. I'm still wowed by how everything came together so perfectly.
  3. The Mysterious Boys - There's so many mysterious boys in this one, and throughout the story, I couldn't figure out for the life of me which ones were good and which ones were bad. Frustrating but in the best kind of way!
Full of mysterious boys, daring girls, and the ultimate shock-factor, The Truth Beneath the Lies is sure to thrill YA thriller fans, especially those like myself who eagerly devoured One of Us Is Lying at the start of the summer.

Summary/Cover Image from Publisher's Website:

There’s no way to come clean to Beau while still protecting Will. But bless their hearts, they live in Culler—where secrets always have a way of revealing themselves.

Disclaimer: This Entangled Teen Crush book contains a hilarious “fakeship,” a scorching-hot impossible relationship, and a heartwarming best-friendship that will make you want to call your best friend right here, right now.
Review:

As soon as I saw the cover and the summary for Danielle Ellison's The Sweetheart Sham, I knew I had to have it! I mean, a small town setting, a fake relationship, AND a second chance romance? My YA contemporary loving heart was beating rapidly with excitement and hope.

The Result? The Sweetheart Sham was not good not great but EXCELLENT! Combining delicious southern charm, heartwarming characters, and a swoon worthy romance, The Sweetheart Sham is yet another wonderful addition to YA contemporary, perfect for fans of Sarah Dessen!

The Sweetheart Sham introduces us to Georgia Ann Monroe and Beau Montgomery.

Georgia Ann Monroe is the ultimate people pleaser, which is how she ends up not only as her mother's trusted wedding assistant (a. k. a. 24/7 errand girl) but also as fake girlfriend to her best friend Will. From the first page, I admired Georgia Ann's dedication to the ones she loved. Her friendship with Will was sweet and heartwarming. I thought it was amazing how far she would go to protect him from suffering a broken heart while also urging him to be strong and true to himself. I also loved her relationship with her family. Yes, her mother was overbearing, but it was easy to see how much they loved each other. Plus, Georgia Ann's father always had me laughing - I loved how he could escape the madness by going to his shed. As the book progressed, however, it was easy to see there was a part of Georgia Ann missing: the spark and feistiness that used to make her...well her. With the reappearance of Beau back in town, Georgia Ann starts to regain those traits. She lets loose, stands up for what she thinks is right, and even starts to fall in love in the process. I loved the transition!

Beau, on the other hand, is confused yet hopeful. When he left Culler all those years ago he left behind a mess in the form of a broken heart - two to be exact. Now back in Culler, he wants to make it right. Like Georgia Ann, I found Beau incredibly easy to like. He was this perfect mix between perfect and imperfect. I adored his humor and his determination. At times it broke my heart, that he wouldn't mend the fences with his father, or give his mother the answer she wanted; however, as the book progressed, Beau starts to grow up and learn a lot in the process.

The plot in The Sweetheart Sham mostly revolves around Beau and Georgia Ann's second chance at love, the wedding of the summer, and the friendship between Beau, Georgia Ann, and Will. In all of these plot lines, however, one theme was present throughout: being strong, true to yourself, and willing to stand up for what you believe in. Tying in with that, I liked the fact that Danielle included Will's conflict over coming out. I felt that she did a great job of making it realistic, and I especially loved that she gave him such a great ally in the form of Georgia Ann.

In all, The Sweetheart Sham is just like a cup of sweet tea - refreshing and sweet enough that it will have you craving for more, more, more. I can't wait to see whose story is up next. Personally, I'm hoping for Will and his mystery man!

Review:

As soon as I saw winter wonderland-esque cover for Lauren Hawkeye's Christmas Sanctuary, I knew I had to have it! Holiday romances are my addiction this year.

The result? Short and sweet, Lauren Hawkeye's Christmas Sanctuary shows that christmas miracles can be possible.

Christmas Sanctuary introduces the alternating POVs of Nick Shepard and Emma Kelly.

Emma's life hasn't been going well lately. Her mother won't listen to her and her fiancé feels like more of a friend than a lover. She finally hits her breaking point, however, when she finds out that her mother and fiancé have been lying to her. Cutting off ties with her mother and fiancé, she flees to Canada in search of the father she never knew she had. What she finds, though, is something she didn't anticipate: a young sculpture named Nick who infuriates yet excites her....

The aspect I loved the most about Christmas Sanctuary was the setting. I always enjoy reading about snowy, Thomas Kinkade like settings, and that's exactly what I got here. It was especially hilarious to see Emma - a southern girl - adjust to the cold weather albeit a few slightly embarrassing hiccups. The scenes involving her storming off into the snow wearing her high heeled boots were some of the best.

I liked the characters in Christmas Sanctuary. My heart broke for Emma. It's bad enough to find out one of your loved ones has been lying to you but to find out it's TWO loved ones...well, that's just a disaster. It was fun to see Emma find her groove again in Christmas Sanctuary. Better yet, I loved how a feisty side in her began to appear. At first, she was quiet, unwilling to speak up when she disagreed; however, as the book continued, she began to speak her mind, no matter the situation. Nick, on the other hand, was gruff and standoffish, yet there was something I still found appealing about him. I didn't like how he was with Emma at first, but as the book continued, he started to redeem himself.

My only problem here involved development. Given the novella's short length, I didn't find the plot lines to be incredibly well developed, especially those involving Emma's family. I wish more of the storyline had been dedicated to Emma's father. The handling of it was very quick and to the point - overshadowed by Emma's developing romance with Nick.

Overall, if you love holiday romances with sweet endings, Christmas Sanctuary is for you! It wasn't my favorite holiday read of the year, but it was still a good weekend read.

Excerpt:

“Nick wasn’t sure how he knew someone was there, but something made him look away from his work. Standing not five feet away from his worktable was a leggy blonde dressed in fitted black pants and a thick pale-pink sweater. Her hair, a startling shade of white-blond, was pulled back neatly in a ponytail, and her arms were tightly crossed in an obvious attempt to ward off the cold that Nick didn’t feel when he was working.

Annoyed at the interruption, he pushed his visor up off of his face. The woman’s lips formed a soft O as she made a breathy little sound that caught his attention.

“Like what you see?” He grinned as his sudden desire eclipsed any irritation he felt at the disruption. “I’ve got more I can show you if you’re interested.”

This time when she inhaled sharply, the sound carried insult. “I’m looking for Michael Nagorski.”

Her voice—wow. If he’d been intrigued by her just because of the way her sweater hugged her curves, he was downright turned on by the slow drawl in her voice, sweet as a ripe peach. “I was told I could find him here.”

“Just you and me here.” Tugging off his protective mask and elbow-length gloves, he tossed them on the table and picked up a bottle of water, chugging half of it down in big, messy gulps. “And much as I like being all up close with you, you’re going to want to step back a bit. Be a shame for these sparks to hit that pretty face of yours.”

She frowned, her eyes narrowing, and he felt—almost—like he should bite his tongue. He’d perfected his flirtatious patter, and on the island here, even back on the mainland, it worked just fine.

This woman clearly wasn’t impressed. Nor was she moving to do what he said—instead she stayed exactly where she was. “You’re wearing far less than I am. That can’t be safe.”

He shrugged the comment off. Yeah, he should be fully covered when he worked. No, he wasn’t going to change his work uniform, now or ever. When he wore too much clothing, his creativity was stifled. He’d rather risk the scars.

Not that the piece he was working on was going all that well, anyway. Furrowing his brow, he glared over at the shelf that held Michael’s most recent creations. His mentor had never been blocked. Probably because he did his best work when he was depressed, a pretty habitual state of being for him.

That sweet southern drawl melted into his consciousness again, drawing his attention back to the woman standing in his garage.

“I said, when do you reckon he’ll be back?” The look in her pale-blue eyes was full of exasperation, and something about the way she compressed her lips tugged at his mind. She looked like…no. No way.

“Who are you, exactly?” Stepping closer, he watched her spine straighten as he looked her up and down. The Game of Thrones dragon-lady hair color…the tall, slender frame. The same crinkle of frustration that Nick had seen on Mike’s face a million times, usually directed at him.

“My name is Emma Kelly.” Her words floated in honey, sweet and heavy. So different from Mike’s clearly enunciated voice.

She wasn’t old enough to be a sibling, yet the resemblance was undeniable. The next logical relation would be a daughter.

“I’m his…it seems that Mr. Nagorski would be…my father.” Well. That confirmed it.

Mike had never mentioned a daughter to Nick. Not that it was any of his business, but he was surprised. Shocked, actually. He’d met Mike ten years ago when he’d signed with the same agent as the older man. Mike hadn’t been too happy when Hannah had pushed him into mentoring her new client, and Nick hadn’t been overly thrilled to be receiving advice from someone who was so sure he was right all the time. Somehow they’d pushed through their differences, and Nick was pretty sure he was the closest friend that Mike had. Hell, the whole reason that he was on Salt Spring Island in the first place was to keep an eye on his friend, who was prone to slip into deep depressive episodes without someone nudging him along.

Okay, that was about half the reason. But it was a generous half. Mike was an antisocial creature, happiest when he was alone in the studio or camping in the woods, and Nick knew he was pretty much the only confidant that the other man had. Which was why he was startled that he’d never heard even a whisper of a daughter from his friend.

“The woman—Emma—cleared her throat, and Nick realized that she was waiting for more information. Where she could find Mike, probably, or when he would be back.

His attention went to her lips again as she ran a delicate pink tongue over them, leaving a sheen of moisture behind. Usually, when he was attracted to a woman, he didn’t hesitate to flirt, to use deliberately cocky words and arrogant charm to draw her into his bed. Or onto his worktable—that would work, too.

Emma, though? She was clearly not impressed by his tricks. He couldn’t deny that it intrigued him.

It occurred to him that the reason Mike had never mentioned her might be because he didn’t know she existed. As his friend, the best thing Nick could do was get her out of the way long enough for him to give Mike some warning.

Pulling his attention away from those full lips again, he felt a strangely strong surge of disappointment. Nick usually used sex to help him achieve that blankness of mind that he needed to chase away his grief, but he suspected that if he had this southern lady beneath him, it would be more than that.

She was Mike’s daughter. And there was no way he would hurt his closest friend by sleeping with his kid. Especially if Mike didn’t know he had one. So, she had to go. And he’d learned that the best way to chase women off was just to be himself—after all, there was a thin line between arrogant charm and asshole.

He looked up at her again, at her long legs and white-blond hair, both obviously inherited from Mike. The instant attraction to her was potent, yet at the same time the clear reminder of who she was—the daughter of his best friend—created an uncomfortable dissonance in his mind.

He and Mike had been friends for a long time. The fact that he even found Emma attractive was enough to bring guilt weighing down on him.

“Well, baby, I’m afraid Mike isn’t going to be coming back anytime soon,” he said as he turned back to his torch, reaching for his gloves. “So unless you want to stick around and entertain me until he does, I’m going to have to ask you to go.”

About Lauren Hawkeye:
Lauren Hawkeye/ Lauren Jameson never imagined that she’d wind up telling stories for a living… though when she looks back, it’s easy to see that she’s the only one who is surprised. Always “the kid who read all the time”, Lauren made up stories about her favorite characters once she’d finished a book… and once spent an entire year narrating her own life internally. No, really. But where she was just plain odd before publication, now she can at least claim to have an artistic temperament.

Lauren lives in the Rocky Mountains of Alberta, Canada with her husband, toddler, pit bull and idiot cat, though they do not live in an igloo, nor do they drive a dogsled. In her nonexistent spare time Lauren can be found knitting (her husband claims that her snobby yarn collection is exorbitant), reading anything she can get her hands on, or sweating her way through spin class. She loves to hear from her readers!

It’s clear they both want what’s best for Emily, but Will’s not used to being told he’s wrong, and Cassie doesn’t seem to have a problem letting him know whenever she thinks he’s messing up.

Review:

Confession time: I love, love, love Entangled's Billionaire romances. It's gotten to the point that as soon as I see the words 'Entangled' and 'Billionaire,' I instantly add the book to my TBR, no questions asked. It's worked out quite well for me, as they have yet to let me down. Thankfully, Cate Cameron's The Billionaire's Forever Family has kept that trend going strong. Equal parts sweet as well as sexy, The Billionaire's Forever Family is a book that easily worked its way into my heart.

There's many aspects that I loved about The Billionaire's Forever Family, but I have to say my ultimate favorite was the emphasis on family! The bonds between Emily and Cassie as well as Emily and will and eventually Emily, Cassie, and Will warmed my heart and brought plenty of happy tears. I loved that Cate showed that "family" can take on so many different meanings. Better yet, she showed the ups and downs that those relationships can bring, especially when it comes to letting pride get in the way of happiness.

Tying into this, I adored the main characters.

Cassie is strong, determined and feisty. It broke my heart that she had to give up so much to provide a loving home to her niece, but at the same time, it warmed my heart to see the kindness and protection she was willing to offer. Throughout the book, Cassie is torn over a big decision. She's drowning in hospital bills, her roof is leaking, and her business is barely breaking even, but in the form of Will she's given the easy way out: a surplus of money. Casey struggles with this solution - yes, it would be easy, but is she willing to let this man, one she barely knows, in and loose her pride and self respect in the process? I really liked that Cate Cameron included this struggle in Casey's story. It added zest and realness to Casey's character, and I especially liked that she wasn't someone who'd just take the easy way out and run.

Like Casey, Will was incredibly lovable; however, I will admit that at first he made me want to rip my hair out with his actions. I mean, seriously, who thinks it's a good idea to send a group of lawyers into a tough situation when you could just do the "right" thing and go yourself. As the book continues, though, it's easy to see that overall Will is a stand-up guy. He's kind and warm and he even wants this make-shift form of a family; however, he struggles with using money as his solution to everything.

Together Casey and Will are a fantastic couple. The banter was strong and the chemistry even stronger. Throughout the book, I was rooting for them (well, mostly Casey) to get off their high horses and see that love was there. As hinted to above, I loved the ups and downs they faced. It made their relationship all the stronger, and better yet, it added some delicious tension to the mix.

In all, The Billionaire's Forever Family has become a forever favorite in my eyes. It's adorable, sweet, and romantic - the perfect weekend read.
