Best Books I’ve Read in 2017

So I've actually already put together a list of my top ten favorites for Top Ten Tuesday, which you can find here. In that list, I focused solely on books released this year.

Today, however, I'm going to talk about an additional 10 I LOVED (since I have read lots of books since then!!) and include ones that weren't released in 2017.

This Mortal Coil by Emily Suvada: I was slightly afraid to pick this one up. Everyone seemed to enjoy it, and I didn't want to be that ONE person who *gasp* didn't like it. Thankfully, that didn't happen! This book almost filled The Hunger Games void in my life. It's smart, well developed, action packed, and romantic. I shipped (and still do ship!) Catrina and Cole so hard.

Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty: This book has to be on the list, because it's actually the reason why I'm back here doing this reading and blogging thing again. After I finished college in May, I had a sudden burst of free time and was floundering with what to do with it. So I picked this up on a whim, and DEVOURED it and then proceeded to devour all of Liane's other books. This book is thrilling, suspenseful, and the characters are complex and imperfect. Liane is a star, and I'm hoping that 2019 brings a new book from her!

Free to Fall by Lauren Miller: This one had been on my shelf for years (it was released in 2014!), and after reading it all I could think was why hadn't I read it sooner?! This one is GOOD and it's so underrated. The boarding school setting is so well done, and the mystery is one of the best I've seen this year. The twists and turns had me outright gasping from start to finish!

You'll Miss Me When I'm Gone by Rachel Lynn Solomon: I had the pleasure of reading an eARC of this it, and guys, it BLEW me away! It's the kind of book that once you start it you can't put it away. I ran through all my chores and errands that day just so I could spend the whole evening reading it. It's one of those contemporaries that reminds me how wonderful YA can be. The bond between the sisters is messy yet beautiful, and I couldn't get over how REAL the girls where! I loved this one so much that I've even pre-ordered a copy (it comes out January 2nd!).

One Night to Fall by Kelsey Kingsley: Sometimes second novels fall into that horrible sophomore slump, but there wasn't any sophomore slump to be found here. Instead, this one blew Kelsey's debut out of the water. Emotional, hopeful, and spellbinding, One Night to Fall made me think about second chances, REALLY think about them, about how magical and wonderful they can be.

34 Pieces of You by Carmen Rodrigues: Another book I'm completely late to the party on! I was slightly hesitant to pick this up - the reviews were mixed - but I'm so happy I gave it a try. It's again one of those books that I couldn't put down. It features a lot of POVs (I think 4 or 5 if I remember correctly) but Carmen did such a great job of making them distinct as well as weaving them together. Definitely a book every YA contemp lover should pick up if they haven't already!

When It's Real by Erin Watt: This book takes a plot line - normal girl fall for movie start, drama and romance ensues - yet I ATE it up. I loved the main character - she was so sensible, snarky, and just all around relatable! - and I loved the romance - Oakley is DEFINITELY one of my favorite book boyfriends of the year.

Sparked by Helena Echlin & Malena Watrous: Mysterious as well as creepy, Sparked is one of my favorite YA paranormals of the year! I CAN'T wait for book #2!

Paintbrush by Hannah Bucchin: One of the most underrated books of 2017 and yet another breakout contemporary YA debut!

Seven Ways to Lose Your Heart by Tiffany Truitt: One of those books that left me with the BIGGEST smiles on my face!! I love Tiffany's books - they're like my new adult addiction right now!

And that's a wrap!! Have you read any of these books? Loved them? Hated them? Let me know in the comments!

    1. I could totally see you loving it, Alyssa!! The only thing that worries me is there is a slight touch of a love triangle so I don't know if you'd be too fond of that.

  4. Such a great list, Lauren. I'm dying to read Big Little Lies (and watch the TV series!) and You'll Miss Me When I'm Gone also looks amazing. The Mortal Coil I'm kinda nervous about picking up, because I've heard a lot of mixed things about it, but I love that the points you mentioned were awesome. Maybe I should give it a go :)

    Happy Christmas!

You know I was worried about The Mortal Coil as well, but I'm glad I tried it. It really managed to surprise me :)
