Set in the near future, this action-packed YA novel—already optioned by Sony Pictures—will take readers out of this world and on a quest to become one of six teens sent on a mission to Jupiter’s moon. This is the next must-read for fans of Illuminae and The Martian.

When Leo and Naomi are drafted, along with twenty-two of the world’s brightest teenagers, into the International Space Training Camp, their lives are forever changed. Overnight, they become global celebrities in contention for one of the six slots to travel to Europa—Jupiter’s moon—and establish a new colony, leaving their planet forever. With Earth irreparably damaged, the future of the human race rests on their shoulders.

For Leo, an Italian championship swimmer, this kind of purpose is a reason to go on after losing his family. But Naomi, an Iranian-American science genius, is suspicious of the ISTC and the fact that a similar mission failed under mysterious circumstances, killing the astronauts onboard. She fears something equally sinister awaiting the Final Six beneath Europa’s surface.

In this cutthroat atmosphere, surrounded by strangers from around the world, Naomi finds an unexpected friend in Leo. As the training tests their limits, Naomi and Leo’s relationship deepens with each life-altering experience they encounter.

But it’s only when the finalists become fewer and their destinies grow nearer that the two can fathom the full weight of everything at stake: the world, the stars, and their lives.

Review:

A few years back I read Alexandra Monir's Timeless series and fell in love with the world she created. So it's no surprise that I loved The Final Six, the first book in Alexandra's new series. Combining secrets, life-and-death stakes, and romance, The Final Six is an enthralling journey from start to finish.

The setting and world building were two of the most fascinating parts. I appreciated the level of detail Alexandra put into describing the storms, the challenges the world faced because of them, and the training camp. The setting was eye-opening, chilling, and even a tad stomach churning, because while our climate change isn't nearly this bad yet, it could very well be this bad in the coming years. Honestly, books like these should be a wake-up call.

The Final Six introduces Leo and Naomi, two teenagers from opposite sides of the world brought together by the International Space Training Camp. Leo and Naomi are strong, tactful, and passionate. I found them likable as well as relatable. I also liked that they both had such different feelings towards the training camp and the possibility of being part of the final six.

From the start, Leo wants to be picked. He views it as his second chance, and the thought of not being picked, of being forced to return to his country, makes him even more determined to come out on top. I admired his ambition and positivity. I also loved that while he wanted to win, he didn't distance himself from his teammates. His friendship with his roommate was one of my favorite parts of the book.

Naomi, on the other hand, views being chosen as a death sentence. She doesn't want to be torn away from her family. She also doesn't like the risks the camp is willing to take to make this new planet home. Something doesn't feel right to her, and she's determined to find out the whole story. I'll admit that Naomi's constant stirring of the pot got on my nerves; however, I also could understand why she was so desperate to find out answers, to challenge everything. I'd probably be the same way in her situation, and I did give her props: the girl had some major guts.

The Final Six mostly focuses on setting up the world as well as the training and final selection for the mission. Everything starts of a little slow, because Alexandra does spend a decent amount of time setting up everything, but it never felt boring or nonessential. The training camp provided so many thrills and chills. I loved all the science parts, and I also liked the different authority figures presented. Some of their actions were so incredibly shady, and I was constantly questing their motives.

The only aspect that I didn't outright love was the ending. It felt somewhat rushed and I didn't like how perfectly everything aligned. Don't get me wrong, I was happy with the outcome, but it just didn't seem "realistic."

Regardless, The Final Six is an enjoyable series opener, and given the emphasis on climate change, it's also a timely book.

4 stars!!

Review: Timekeeper by Alexandra Monir

Summary/Cover Image from Publisher's Website:
This sequel to Timeless combines breathtaking romance with a tale of complex magic in a story that will have every reader believing in the transcendent power of love.

When Philip Walker appears as a new student in Michele Windsor's high school class, she is floored. He is the love she thought she lost forever when they said goodbye during her time travels last century. Overjoyed that they can resume the relationship they had a lifetime ago, Michele eagerly approaches him and discovers the unthinkable: he doesn't remember her. In fact, he doesn't seem to remember anything about the Philip Walker of 1910.

Michele then finds her father's journals, which tell stories of his time-traveling past. As she digs deeper, she learns about his entanglement with a mysterious and powerful organization called the Time Society and his dealings with a vengeful Windsor ancestor. Michele soon finds herself at the center of a rift over 120 years in the making, one whose resolution will have life-or-death consequences.
Review:

Ever since I read Timeless last summer, I've been dying to get my hands on the sequel. Therefore, when Timekeeper wound up in my mailbox a few weeks, I knew I had to read it right away. Thankfully, Timekeeper by Alexandra Monir was just as dashing, romantic, and suspenseful as the first one.

Timekeeper picks up just where the last one left off with Michelle spotting a Phillip look-a-like and promptly fainting from the surprise and confusion of it all. However, as Michelle is soon to learn she has more than just that, because as she is soon to find out: someone's on the hunt to ruin everything she has, and they aren't going to go down easily. Scared for her life as well as her family and friends, Michelle begins the hunt to find out just how to stop this, but the problem is she only has SEVEN days. What will happen next? Will Michelle figure it out, or will everything be lost? In addition, what's the deal with the new Phillip Walker? Only time and more pages can tell in this fast paced and compelling sequel that will sweep readers into the same kind of time travel and fun as before!

One of the things I enjoyed most about this one was the plot. Time travel is such a fun topic, in my idea, and knowing how well Alexandra worked with it last time, I had no doubt Timekeeper would keep up with the same degree of goodness. I was exactly right. I loved how easily Alexandra swept between time periods, making me feel as if I was right there with Michelle, as well as how she laced everything together perfectly. In addition, I specifically enjoyed how Alexandra added in Michelle's dad journal to the plot as well as the Timekeeper handbook. Both added a lot to the plot content wise as well as depth wise, and truly, I couldn't think of a better way in which she could have developed both aspects. It gave a richer feel than just having everything hashed out in between a few dialogues tags, and once again, she was able to blend it all together beautifully.

Another part of this book I enjoyed were the characters. Michelle was such a great protagonist in the first one, and the same rang true in this one. One thing that I loved most about Michelle's character was how strong and dauntless she way. Any other teen probably would have ran away at the situation Michelle was facing, but Michelle stood strong and took it all on. In addition, I loved seeing her friendships continue as well as her every budding relationship with the new Phillip Walker as well as the old one. A lot of fun twists where thrown into that plot line...let me tell you. The addition of the antagonist in this one was also great. They were surly and mean and never failed to complicate things for Michelle, but it added a lot of exciting things to the book.

In all, Timekeeper by Alexandra Monir was a great conclusion to the story of Michelle and Phillip as well as their friends and family. I'm sad that's it to be over, but truthfully, I couldn't have gotten a better ending!

Blog Tour: Timekeeper by Alexandra Monir (Guest Post & Giveaway!)

As part of the blog tour for Timeless by Alexandra Monir, I have a guest post by Alexandra as well as as a giveaway. So without a further ado...

“Michele gave the street signs a double take, unable to believe that this was the area known as Union Square. The Union Square Michele knew from film and TV was an unexceptional, thoroughly modern part of the city, surrounded by trendy restaurants, the W Hotel, office towers, and New York University buildings. But this Union Square was something else entirely. Surrounding the expanse of the square were blocks and blocks of resplendent department and specialty stores, bringing to mind the famed shopping boulevards of Paris. Elegant carriages lined every curb, with liveried footmen standing on the sidewalk before them.” –TIMELESS, pg 86

Union Square- 1910
Union Square has had a vastly evolving history, and in the Gilded Age era Michele time-travels to in Timeless, the area included a stretch known as Ladies Mile. Imagine the famed Rodeo Drive of Beverly Hills, but one hundred years in the past! Shopping on Ladies Mile at the turn of the twentieth century was quite the production. Ladies would have to be dressed to the nines, complete with their very best hats, furs, gloves and jewels. They would be chauffeured in their horse-drawn carriage, escorted by a maid, and badgered by handsome young salesmen whose job was to display their wares and make it impossible for these wealthy shoppers to leave empty-handed.

Union Square- Today
In the shops and restaurants of today’s Union Square, you’ll find New Yorkers dressed in jeans and texting on their iPhones, without a trace of horse-drawn carriages or livered footmen. But if you find yourself there on a snowy, quiet night, it’s not too difficult to imagine the days when it was known as Ladies Mile.

Oh, and fun fact: my release party for Timeless was held at the W Union Square!

Thanks for stopping by, Alexandra!

Review:

Ever since I first heard about Timeless all the way back in 2010, I've been dying to read it. I love any book that involves time travel, especially when the said time travel involves going back in time. Plus I just adored the cover. I loved the colors and mysterious feeling it had. Therefore, when a copy of the book landed in my hands, I dived right into it, and thankfully, it turned out to be everything I hoped it would be and much, much more. Romantic, spellbinding, and suspenseful, Timeless contained so many fantastic aspects!

Michele Windsor has always lived a fun and nearly carefree life with her mother in California. The fact that she's related to the famous and wealthy Windsors doesn't phase her one bit nor does the fact that her father disappeared so suddenly when she was a baby. She's learned to live with these things. However, everything changes the day her mother is involved in a fatal car crash and doesn't make it. Suddenly, Michele is shipped off to live with her chilly and formal grandparents in a big yet imposing brownstone in New York City. Michele doesn't know what to make of it all. She knows she can't stand her grandparents, but she doesn't know what to do about it. She also knows they're keeping secrets from her, but how she can find them out, she doesn't know. Therefore, when she finds a way to send herself back in the past into the lives of former Windsors, she's thrilled. It gives her the reprieve she so desperately desires. What she doesn't expect though is the trouble and chaos that comes with it as well as the questions...questions that may lead her to answers she never expected.

As mentioned before, they was just SO MUCH to love about this one! For one, I adored Michele from the get go. I found her voice to be compelling from the get go so it was easy to get lost in her story. I thought Monir did a great job of developing Michele's character. Michele was someone who's been through a lot yet it's made her all the stronger. What I liked most about her character, though, was seeing how ready she always was to help others...from her ancestors to random people she meet in her travels, she played roles in nearly everyone's lives. I also really enjoyed seeing the past Windsor's from her eyes, especially since each and everyone was so different.

The plot in this was also a ton of fun. Monir did a great job of developing the time travel aspect in this one as well as tying it together with Michele's modern day life. I also loved the whole little forbidden romance angle she added in. It was innocent yet so sweet, and even though there's no way it could possibly work, it didn't stop me form rooting for it.

Lastly, Monir's writing was excellent, especially for a debut author. I'm curious to see how she develops this series as the books continue.

In all, Timeless is yet another book I highly suggest, but word of warning: the ending will have you dying to read the next book!

Waiting On Wednesday: Week 81

My pick this week is:

Timeless by Alexandra Monir
When her mother is killed in a car accident, Michele Windsor has no choice but to move in with the wealthy grandparents she's never met in New York. Disillusioned by their coldness, Michele retreats into her room, where she discovers her great-great-aunt's journal--and, once she touches its pages, finds herself hurtled back in time.

In the glamorous Gilded Age, Michele learns that a wedding is coming up between the Windsors and another prominent family, the Walkers. But when Michele attends a party, something miraculous happens: while almost no one can see her in this era, one gorgeous young man with sparkling blue eyes can. Drawn together by mutual attraction, the two bond over music and the parents they've recently lost. But when the party is over, Michele learns the truth--the man she just fell for is Phillip Walker. And she, unknowingly, has just inspired him to call off his wedding to her great-great-aunt, prompting a family feud that will last for generations.
As Michele travels back and forth in time, she and Phillip meet over and over, always frustrated by their inability to have more than a few hours together. Michele knows she should try to make a life in the present, but none of the boys at school can hold a candle to Phillip. Finally, Michele tries to end their romance altogether--spurring a tragedy that transcends generations. Has Michele destroyed her chances for happiness? Or is her love for Phillip . . . timeless? (Summary from RandomHouse.ca/Cover taken from RandomHouse's website)
Dosen't this sound amazing? I think so. I love the idea of time travel, so I'm sure I'll adore Timeless. Also, I have to say, I adore the cover of this.

Timeless will be released January 11, 2011.
