Review: Burn for Burn by Jenny Han & Siobhan Vivian

Summary/Cover Image from Publisher's Website:
Payback is paradise in this start to a trilogy from New York Timesbestselling author Jenny Han and Siobhan Vivian.

Postcard-perfect Jar Island is home to charming tourist shops, pristine beaches, amazing oceanfront homes—and three girls secretly plotting revenge.

KAT is sick and tired of being bullied by her former best friend.
LILLIA has always looked out for her little sister, so when she discovers that one of her guy friends has been secretly hooking up with her, she’s going to put a stop to it.
MARY is perpetually haunted by a traumatic event from years past, and the boy who’s responsible has yet to get what’s coming to him.

None of the girls can act on their revenge fantasies alone without being suspected. But together…anything is possible.

With an unlikely alliance in place, there will be no more “I wish I’d said…” or “If I could go back and do things differently...” These girls will show Jar Island that revenge is a dish best enjoyed together.
Review:

Ever since this book was announced last year, I have been dying to read it based on the following aspects...
(1) Jenny Han is one of my favorite authors ever (case in point: the Summer trilogy! If you haven't read it, what are you waiting for?!)
(2) The premise sounded amazing. I love revenge stories!
(3) The cover...it's just great and after reading the book, I feel like it really goes with the story.
Because of that all, when I saw this book at the library the other week, I checked it out and dived right in, dying to know whether or not I would enjoy the story. Thankfully, I did! It was mysterious and suspenseful, and better yet, it contained three characters and a setting I came to love!

Burn for Burn is the revenge story of three high school students- Mary, Kat, and Lillia. Mary, Kat, and Lillia are very different girls. Lillia is the a start cheerleader and part of the popular crowd at school who loves her life. That is until one end of the summer party. Kat is a tough, street-smart girl who faced her fall from the social ladder back in freshman year. Then there's Mary, a shy, somewhat socially awkward girl who fell as prey to one of the most popular boys back in elementary school. He almost ruined her life, and now she's back to ruin his.

From the start, I was captivated by their stories. I loved the fact that Siobhan and Jenny switched back and forth between each character, because not only did it establish them fully, but it allowed for me to really get to know each one. While each girl was different, at the core, they were very similar. They were three girls who had been given the worst of luck...who had seen that life isn't always that great. And because of it, they didn't know what to do besides retaliate back.

The plot in was equally good. I'm always up for a good revenge story, as mentioned above, and with that, that was definitely achieved. It was fun to see the girls plan each of their acts of revenge as well as carry out the plan. What I enjoyed most, though, was seeing them have to deal with the consequences as well as karma that came from their revenge. It allowed for the book to have a more realistic feel, in my opinion, as the girls continually wondered if what they were doing was the right thing. The one aspect of the book, though, that I was a little confused about, though, was the hinting of a somewhat paranormal ability of Mary's. It was mentioned briefly a few times, but never really fully addressed, so I'll be intrigued to see what comes of it in future books.

The writing was also decent. Jenny and Siobhan did a great job of meshing their voices together on this one and creating an intriguing story. Better yet, I loved that they weren't afraid to throw in some good curve balls. The one at the end especially got me, and while I'm mad that I'll have to wait until the fall of 2013 to find out what happens, it was a great way to end the book.

In all, Burn for Burn is a fun, fast paced book perfect for fans of Pretty Little Lairs and the Fury trilogy.

Waiting on Wednesday is hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine.

The Color of Snow
by Brenda Stanley

When a beautiful 16-year-old girl named Sophie is found sequestered in a cage-like room in a rundown house in the desolate hills of Arbon Valley, Idaho, the entire community is shocked to learn she is the legendary Callidora--a baby girl who was kidnapped from her crib almost seventeen years ago and canonized in missing posters with portraits of what the fabled girl might resemble. Authorities soon learn that the cage was there to protect people from Sophie, because her biological father believes she is cursed.

Sophie is discovered after the man she knows as Papa, shoots and injures Damien, a young man who is trying to rescue her. Now, unsocialized and thrust into the world, and into a family she has never met, Sophie must decide whether she should accept her Papa’s claims that she is cursed and he was only trying to protect others, or trust the new people in her life who have their own agendas. Guided by a wise cousin, Sophie realizes that her most heartbreaking challenge is to decide if her love for Damien will destroy him like her Papa claims, or free her from past demons that haunt her mind.
This one sounds really different as well as interesting! I'll be curious to see how it turns out.

The Color of Snow will be released June 1, 2012.

by Jenny Han & Siobhan Vivian

The start of a brand-new young adult trilogy about three very different girls who overcome their differences and band together to seek revenge on those who have wronged them, uncovering a supernatural secret about what brought them together and why in the process. Each book will rotate back and forth between the perspectives of all three characters.
I've been pumped to read this one ever since its deal was first annoucced in Publisher's Weekly. Jenny Han is one of my favorite authors, and I've also liked the books I've read by Siobhna Vivian, so I'm excited to see how they work together. Plus, I adore the cover!

Burn for Burn will be released September 18, 2012.

Waiting On Wednesday: Week 73

My pick this week is:

Not That Kind Of Girl by Siobhan Vivian (9/1/10)

Natalie Sterling wants to be in control. She wants her friends to be loyal. She wants her classmates to elect her student council president. She wants to find the right guy, not the usual jerk her school has to offer. She wants a good reputation, because she believes that will lead to good things.

But life is messy, and it's very hard to be in control of it. Not when there are freshman girls running around in a pack, trying to get senior guys to sleep with them. Not when your friends have secrets they're no longer comfortable sharing. Not when the boy you once dismissed ends up being the boy you wants to sleep with yourself - but only in secret, with nobody ever finding out.

Slut or saint? Winner or loser? Natalie is getting tired of these forced choices - and is now going to find a way to live life in the sometimes messy, sometimes wonderful in-between. (summary and cover from Amazon)

I really enjoyed Siobhan's first novel, A Little Friendly Advice, so I'm really looking forward to reading this one, especially since the storyline sounds intruiging. And the cover is cute too!

Contest for A Little Friendly Advice by Siobhan Vivian

Siobhan has been nice enough to donate a copy of A Little Friendly Advice to be given away to one lucky winner. A Little Friendly Advice, in my point of view, was a awesome debut novel with a great cast of characters.

Anyway, here's the blurb from Amazon:

Ruby's turning sixteen . . . but the day doesn't turn out to be as sweet as it's supposed to be. Her long lost father shows up, and Ruby doesn't want to have anything to do with him. Instead, she wants to hang out with her friends - loyal Beth, dangerous Katherine, and gossipy Maria. They have plenty of advice for her - about boys, about her dad, about how she should look and what she should be feeling. But really, Ruby doesn't know what to think or feel. Especially when a new boy comes into the picture . . . and Ruby discovers some of her friends aren't as truthful as they say.

So, would you like to win a signed copy of this fabulous novel? All, you have to do is comment on this post telling me one book you are looking forward to reading this year that is not yet out.

Inspired Friday with Siobhan Vivian

Siobhan Vivian is the author of A Little Friendly Advice and the newly released, Same Difference. So, without a futher ado here's Siobhan talking about Same Difference!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Same Difference was a very personal story for me. I based it off the summer before my senior year of high school, when I went to a summer art program in Philadelphia.
When I was growing up in New Jersey, I knew how to play what I’m going to call “the game”, which means that I knew what to do to blend with the in-crowd, the “right” friends to have…all the stuff that keeps you afloat in high school. It wasn’t all bad, necessarily. I had good friends. I liked my life. But I also felt like there were parts of my personality that I had to bury, to hide from my friends, because they’d think I was weird. A lot of times, I felt like a phony. Like I was playing pretend.
But then I go to Philly and meet all these super cool artsy kids who just don’t care what people think of them. They’re doing crazy stuff and into music I’ve never heard before. It was all so exciting and inspiring, and I found myself drawn into this whole other world. I was totally inspired by the confidence they had. I let some of those hidden parts show. It was exhilarating!
Only, that was a game too. You needed to act a certain way to be friends with those artsy kids. You couldn’t like things that were popular. You had to put on a show. And did I mean it in the same way the artsy kids did? Or was I acting again? In a way, both groups were similar. There were rules you had to follow.
By the end of that summer, I was so mixed up. I didn’t know which version of myself was the real one. Was I the suburban girl who played by the rules, or the arty wild girl who didn’t care what people said/thought about her?
So that became the inspiration behind
SAME DIFFERENCE…the story of a girl who has to find true herself, while she splits her time between two very different groups of friends.
Thanks so much, Siobhan. That was a great guest blog!
Review: A Little Friendly Advice by Siobhan Vivian
All Ruby wants is to celebrate her 16th birthday with her mom and friends and get to use her new camera. Ruby didn’t want her dad to show up out of the blue or for him to actually think she would talk to him after leaving her mom and her.
Ruby’s friends- her best friend, Beth, who has been there through the best and worst of times, the boy loving Maria who always has the latest gossip and party invites, and the newcomer Katherine who is going through problems Ruby went through when her parents separated- all have different advice to give to Ruby about dealing with her father. Though Maria and Katherine think she should have closure with her father, Beth thinks she should not see him again because of all the pain her best friend suffered from before. As, Ruby goes through this eventful week of life she begins to maybe even the people who her care for her the most would give her bad advice.
A Little Friendly Advice by Siobhan Vivian was an awesome book. Ruby’s problem with her dad was a very believable thing that most divorced kids have with their separated parents. Siobhan gave each character a very descriptive feeling that was realistic. Also, she gave a good story of initially good advice going askew and be able to see if that maybe a little friendly advice may be wrong. I loved A Little Friendly Advice, though it could drag on once in a while. Siobhan Vivian is a writer that I’m looking forward to read more of her story’s.
I would suggest this book to people who like Sarah Dessen’s because Siobhan Vivian book reminded me a little of Sarah Dessen and to people who just want to read a good book.
